Chapter Sixteen

Misty

It had been two days since she kissed Tate. Each day she spent without him was torture, but they had agreed to take things slowly for now and Misty wanted to respect their decision. Even so, sometimes she caught herself daydreaming of how blissful their second kiss would be.

The morning light was so breathtaking. Misty walked toward the cliff’s edge to take in the impressive view. Another rustic town sprawled in the valley below, the high altitude making the buildings and people look like doll’s toys. She’d have to ask Tate what it was called.

As she moved further along the edge, Misty thought of Tate, her heart scampered recklessly. He definitely made her tingle in all the right places. She closed her eyes and pictured what he might look like without his shirt on. Would he have a bare chest or a thick carpet of chest hair and rock-solid abs? She hoped it was hairy. The idea of running her fingers through it and feeling it rough against her bare breasts was incredible. It was no secret Tate was ripped, and with a body like that, Misty couldn’t help but wonder how good he’d be in bed. She wanted it to be rough with his body firm and his hands hard against her body.

A noise startled her from her fantasy, and she saw a bear moving through the nearby forest. Although she had expected to run into smaller forest creatures—birds, squirrels, a racoon even—seeing a bear so close was nothing short of terrifying. She had spotted one on her second day at the cabin, but it had been at a much safer distance.

Misty knew better than to make any sudden moves, slowly inching her way back toward home. Her heart pounded away, and blood drummed in her ears. The bear roamed less than fifty yards away, unaware she was there. Despite that, she willed herself to be as quiet as possible, avoiding sticks and dry leaves. She didn’t want to draw any attention to herself.

The bear looked in her direction, and she froze. He sniffed the air, his huge snout bobbing with the motion. Grumbling, the bear looked along the cliff edge, standing almost perfectly still like one of the carved bear figurines found at a rural hobby shop. If she wasn’t so scared, Misty would’ve loved to get even closer. Its chocolate-brown fur and piercing ebony eyes, amazed her. It was definitely a creature of fierce beauty. Misty wondered if perhaps it was the same bear as before. The reserved way the creature stood resembled the body language of the languid bear she saw a week ago when she’d arrived.

As Misty retreated to a safe distance, she made a mental note to let Tate know about Deerskin Peaks newest resident. She didn’t know if they would try to relocate him, but she thought they should know a dangerous predator was roaming so close to civilization. The last thing Misty wanted was to wake up to a bear on her doorstep.
